What We Offer

Play and Creative Arts Therapy

For children aged 4 to 12

RtB picture

We see the whole child beyond behaviours and beyond the diagnosis, we see your child’s heart and help others see it too.

My mission is to offer a safe, nurturing space for children to grow. I support children facing mental, emotional, social, or behavioural difficulties that hold them back from being understood and reaching their true potential.

Therapy is offered in a purpose-built, child-friendly playroom located in Pembury, Tunbridge Wells. This specialised home-based space is fully equipped to help your child feel safe, explore their complex feelings, navigate their difficulties, and begin to heal themselves at their own pace.

What is Play and Creative Arts Therapy?

A safe, research-backed way for children to work through big feelings and experiences, restore confidence, and find their voice.

Play therapy is a developmentally sensitive form of psychotherapy specifically suited to children as it enables them to communicate through their primary means of expression: play and creativity.

The therapeutic relationship that develops between child and therapist facilitates the child's ability to explore and express both creatively and verbally, not only their thoughts and feelings, but also their perception of relationships and life experiences.

Why is play therapy useful for children?

As adults we might use our words to talk to a person we trust about the things that are troubling us. So, it is understandable that we assume children can do the same. However, the ability to put words and meaning to feelings is a complex neurological task that develops only gradually throughout childhood, meaning that often children are left feeling the intensity of their emotions but without any means of communicating how they are feeling. This can often result in behaviour changes that are concerning to parents and teachers. Play therapy provides children with a means of expression for their too-big feelings.

How does it work?

A play therapist uses a toolkit to help children express their feelings and explore them in a way that feels natural and developmentally appropriate:

  • Clay
  • Art
  • Puppets
  • Sand
  • Dressing-up
  • Music
  • Therapeutic storytelling
  • Games
  • Feelings cards
  • Role-play

This enables each child to explore and express themselves and their difficulties in a safe, contained space with a therapist who is separate from home and school.

In a play therapy session each child has autonomy in choosing how they want to play and express themselves.

I will watch, tune in, mirror, reflect back feelings and share in the experience as the child takes me on a journey and shares their story.

Through the metaphor of play a child can experience, explore, feel, control and try out new ways of being and behaving.
